【摘要】:Designprofessionals,foraestheticreasons,havedesiredtolimitthespacingandwidthofsealantjointsonexteriorwallsandotherlocationsofnewbuildings.Analysisoftheperformancefactorsandespeciallytolerancesthataffectasealantjointisnecessarytodetermineifajointwillhavedurabilityandbeeffectiveinmaintainingasealagainstthepassageofairandwaterandnotexperienceprematuredeterioration.Ifperformancefactorsandtolerancesarenotunderstoodandincludedinthedesignofasealantjoint,thenthesealantmayreachitsdurabilitylimitandfailureisadistinctpossibility.Sealantjointfailurecanresultinincreasedbuildingenergyusageduetoairinfiltrationorexfiltration,waterinfiltration,anddeteriorationofbuildingsystemsandmaterials.Infiltratingwatercancausespallingofporousandfriablebuildingmaterialssuchasconcrete,brick,andstone;corrosionofferrousmetals;anddecompositionoforganicmaterials,amongothereffects.Personalinjurycanresultfromafallincurredduetoawettedinteriorsurfaceasaresultofafailedsealantjoint.Buildingindoorairqualitycanbeaffectedduetoorganicgrowthinconcealedanddampareas.Deteriorationisoftendifficultandverycostlytorepair,withthecostofrepairworkusuallygreatlyexceedingtheoriginalcostofthesealantjointwork.Thisguideisapplicabletosealantswithanestablishedmovementcapacity,inparticularelastomericsealantsthatmeetSpecificationC920withaminimummovementcapacityratingofx00B1;12x00BD;percent.Ingeneral,asealantwithlessthanx00B1;12x00BD;percentmovementcapacitycanbeusedwiththejointwidthsizingcalculations;however,thewidthofajointusingsuchasealantwillgenerallybecometoolargetobepracticallyconsideredandinstalled.ItisalsoapplicabletoprecuredsealantextrusionswithanestablishedmovementcapacitythatmeetsSpecificationC1518.Theintentofthisguideistodescribesomeoftheperformancefactorsandtolerancesthatarenormallyconsideredinsealantjointdesign.Equationsandsamplecalculationsareprovidedtoassisttheuserofthisguideindeterminingtherequiredwidthanddepthforsingleandmulti-component,liquid-appliedsealantswheninstalledinproperlypreparedjointopenings.Theuserofthisguideshouldbeawarethatthesinglelargestfactorcontributingtonon-performanceofsealantjointsthathavebeendesignedformovementispoorworkmanship.Thisresultsinimproperinstallationofsealantandsealantjointcomponents.Thesuccessofthemethodologydescribedbythisguideispredictedonachievingadequateworkmanship.Jointsfornewconstructioncanbedesignedbytherecommendationsinthisguideaswellasjointsthathavereachedtheendoftheirservicelifeandneedroutinemaintenanceorjointsthatrequireremedialworkforafailuretoperform.GuideC1193shouldalsobeconsultedwhendesigningsealantjoints.Failuretoinstallasealantanditscomponentsfollowingitsguidelinescanandfrequentlywillresultinfailureofajointdesign.Peerreviewedpapers,publishedinvariousASTMSpecialTechnicalPublications(STP),provideadditionalinformationandexamplesofsealantjointwidthcalculationsthatexpandontheinformationdescribedinthisguide(2-5).Forcasesinwhichthestateoftheartissuchthatcriteriaforaparticularconditionisnotfirmlyestablishedortherearenumerous..........
